Located on the northwest coast of Java, Jakarta is the dynamic capital and most populous city of the Republic of Indonesia, with more than 10 million people living across its area of 661.5 square kilometers. As the heart of Indonesia’s culture, economy, and politics, its population keeps growing. People from all around Indonesia migrate to this city because of its potential to offer a higher standard of living and better job opportunities. It is also a popular destination for expats from around the globe, thanks to its low cost of living. The city may not be very popular amongst tourists and it is infamous for its heavy traffic and pollution, but it is overflowing with world-class restaurants, amazing museums, countless shopping malls, and energetic nightlife.
There is a wide range of apartment types to choose from in Jakarta. Most high-rise apartments can be found in central business districts, while mid-rise and low-rise apartments are widely available throughout the city. High-rise, mid-rise, and low-rise apartments in Jakarta usually have swimming pools, gyms, and kid’s playgrounds. They can also be serviced or non-serviced. Serviced apartments are usually fully-furnished and offer housekeeping, laundry services, private drivers, and many other hotel-like amenities. In terms of room size, renters can choose between studio apartments, 1 to 3 bedroom apartments, loft apartments, and penthouses.
Two of the most popular parts of Jakarta is Central Jakarta and South Jakarta. Central Jakarta is where most of the tourist attractions are located. It is home to Monas (the National Monument), the Presidential Palace, and the fancy shopping malls, such as Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia.
South Jakarta is where visitors can find the Blok M mall and Senayan sports complex. The area is also famous for its trendy cafes and buzzing nightlife.
West Jakarta is where Chinatown is located. It is a bit more laid-back than the South and Center. The main attractions in this part of Jakarta, besides the Chinatown, is Kota Tua (Old Town). Those who want to enjoy Jakarta’s shore can visit North Jakarta, while those who want to visit Jakarta’s culture Park, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) can go to East Jakarta.
As the capital and most developed city in Indonesia, Jakarta offers a high quality of life. However, the living costs in Jakarta are still relatively affordable. Most foreigners coming from western countries can live comfortably, even luxuriously, with very little. This is because the exchange rate of Indonesian Rupiah (Rp) to the US dollar is very favorable; US$1 coverts to around Rp14, 000.
Jakarta is one of the most multicultural cities in Indonesia, so many languages are spoken here. However, Bahasa Indonesian is the most widely spoken language, and some people may be able to speak English proficiently.
The city is warm and humid all year round, and it experiences two seasons: the wet season (October to May) and the dry season (June to September).
Foreigners who want to live in Jakarta will need a visa. The most common type of visa is KITAS, which is valid for 6 to 12 months.
