Guimarães is a Portuguese city and capital of the Ave sub-region, belonging to the Minho region and the district of Braga. It is the seat of the Municipality of Guimarães, which has a total area of 240.95 ksqm, 156,830 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 651 inhabitants per ksqm, subdivided into 48 parishes. The municipality is bounded to the north by the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, to the east by Fafe, to the south by Felgueiras, Vizela and Santo Tirso, to the west by Vila Nova de Famalicão and to the northwest by Braga. This placename may have originated in Vímara Peres, in the middle of the 9th century, when he made this place the main governmental center of the Portucalense county he had conquered for the Kingdom of Asturias. Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities in the country, with its historic center being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001, which makes it definitely one of the largest tourist centers in the region. Its streets and monuments breathe history and enchant those who visit it. The present Guimarães has been able to reconcile, in the best way, the history and consequent maintenance of the heritage with the dynamism and entrepreneurship that characterize modern cities, which was manifested in the nomination for European Capital of Culture in 2012, factors that led Guimarães to be elected by the New York Times as one of the 41 places to visit in 2011 and to consider it one of the emerging cultural points of the Iberian Peninsula. Guimarães is often referred to as the Cradle City, due to the fact that it was the administrative center of the Condado Portucalense established by D. Henrique and his son D. Afonso Henriques, and also because of the historical importance of the Battle of São Mamede, fought on the outskirts of the city on 24 June 1128, which had a significant impact on the formation of the Portuguese nationality. However, the needs of the Reconquista and the protection of territories to the south led this same center to Coimbra in 1129. The region in which Guimarães is integrated is of permanent settlement since at least the national Final Calcolithic, as evidenced by the presence, in the municipality, of the cytanias of Briteiros and Sabroso or the archaeological station of Penha. The Ara of Trajan denounces the use by the Romans of the thermal waters of the village of Caldas das Taipas From the foundation of Guimarães to the foundation of Portugal After the political action of reconquista organized by the Kingdom of Asturias, with the intervention of the nobleman Vímara Peres still in the distant ninth century, the medieval foundation of the current city has its roots in the distant tenth century. It was at this time that Countess Mumadona Dias, widow of Hermenegildo Gonçalves, had a double monastery built on her property in Vimaranes, which became a centre of attraction and gave rise to the settlement of a population group known as the lower village. In parallel and to defend the agglomeration, she had a castle built a short distance away on the hill, thus creating a second point of settlement in the upper village. The two cores were connected by the street of Santa Maria. Then the Monastery became a Royal Collegiate and acquired great importance due to the privileges and donations that kings and nobles were granting it. It became a famous pilgrimage sanctuary and believers from all over the world came with prayers and promises. The granting, by the Count D. Henrique, of the first national charter (considered by some historians earlier than that of Constantine of Panóias), on an unknown date, but possibly in 1096, attests to the growing impo
