Summers commonly see daily highs in the 80s to 90s °F, while winter lows frequently drop below freezing. The first settler near present-day Cambridge was Hiram Doing in 1871, and the post office opened as Medicine Creek in 1874. The town was called Pickletown or Pickleville after J.W.
