However, when compared to other cities in Indonesia, the cost of living is higher, though still relatively affordable for most foreigners. The minimum monthly salary for a family to live comfortably is around Rp20, 000,000 (around $1,400), but most expats earn more than that amount. The official currency used in the city is Indonesian Rupiah (Rp) and US$1 will get you around Rp14, 000.
People who live in Jakarta enjoy a tropical climate, with an average annual temperature of 27.6°C. The wet season in the country starts in October and ends in May, while the dry season runs from June to September.
In order to live in Jakarta, foreigners need to apply for a visa. There are several different types of visas available, but most expats obtain temporary residence permits or KITAS, which is valid for about 6 to 12 months.
